Working in Senior Care

WNYAHSA invites you to explore rewarding employment opportunities working with older adults. Our members offer a variety of careers in the Western New York area - at nursing homes, assisted living communities, adult homes, retirement communities, adult day programs and service organizations.

What is the principal qualification one must have to work for a WNYAHSA organization? First and foremost, you must like older people and be attentive to their special needs. Working with the elderly is a unique opportunity. Patience, understanding, sympathy and a gentle touch are among the qualities that identify the staff who work in our homes.

Volunteer Opportunities

WNYAHSA facilities offer ample volunteer opportunities for those community members interested in making a positive contribution to the elderly of our area.

Volunteering can take many different forms from working directly with residents of homes to assisting staff with clerical work. Volunteers with special talents can be a wonderful addition to a facility. Friendly pets are also welcome to come in with their owners and spread their special kind of cheer.

Volunteers are needed during the days, evenings or weekends. Some volunteer jobs are regularly scheduled and others are more occasional.

Groups such as scout troops, church groups, arts organizations, speaker's bureaus, gardening clubs, etc., bring the community to the residents, and are always appreciated.

Background Checks

Member facilities of the Western New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (WNYAHSA) have access to a background check program through Erie County's Central Police Services. This program enables senior care facilities to hire employees of the highest caliber. In addition, the program provides a comprehensive pre-hiring tool and verification process to avoid hiring inappropriate employees.

WNYAHSA and other Western New York senior care providers worked with Central Police Services for many months to establish the program. Central Police Services provides the facilities with access to the Erie Municipal Police Information Retrieval Enhancement (EMPIRE) System and the Criminal Records and Information Management System operated by the New York State Unified Court System to identify individuals convicted in state Supreme, county, city, town and village courts in Erie County.

This program is part of a continuing effort to provide the highest quality care and protection for senior residents. The system of background checks also complements the extensive hiring process used by individual WNYAHSA members.

Currently, WNYAHSA and other senior care organizations are working to support a proposal to develop a statewide system of background checks.
